Our Favourite Neutral Paint Colors

Choosing the right neutral paint color can feel deceptively simple—until you’re standing in front of a wall covered in sample swatches that all look almost the same. The truth is, subtle undertones make all the difference. These four shades: Swiss Coffee, Chantilly Lace, Pale Oak, and Dove Wing are longtime favourites of ours for a reason. Each color offers a distinct mood while remaining timeless, versatile, and easy to live with.

Here’s how we use them—and how to know which one belongs in your space.

Swiss Coffee
Warm, creamy, and endlessly inviting

Swiss Coffee is the go-to neutral when you want warmth without committing to beige. It has a soft, creamy undertone that reads cozy but still clean, making it ideal for open-concept homes and main living spaces.

Best for:

  • Living rooms and family rooms
  • Open layouts where warmth is key
  • Homes with wood tones, stone, or warmer finishes

Swiss Coffee shifts beautifully throughout the day, picking up natural light without ever feeling stark or yellow.

Chantilly Lace

Crisp, clean, and effortlessly modern

If you love the look of a true white, Chantilly Lace delivers. It’s a bright, neutral white with minimal undertones, which makes it feel fresh and architectural.

Best for:

  • Trim, doors, and ceilings
  • Modern or transitional interiors
  • Spaces with plenty of natural light

In the select spaces where we choose to do the trim and ceiling a different shade of white, chantilly lace is always our top choice.

Pale Oak

Soft, airy, and quietly sophisticated

Pale Oak sits beautifully between greige and warm neutral. It’s subtle, calming, and has just enough depth to add interest without overpowering a room.

Best for:

  • Bedrooms and home offices
  • Hallways and quieter spaces
  • Homes looking for a layered neutral palette

Designer note: Pale Oak is a favorite for clients who want warmth without going “too beige.” It’s understated in the best way.

Dove Wing

Moody, refined, and timeless

Dove Wing is a warm gray with depth—perfect for creating contrast while still feeling soft and elevated. It works beautifully when you want a room to feel intentional and grounded.

Best for:

  • Dining rooms or powder rooms
  • Cabinetry or built-ins
  • Accent walls and millwork

Designer note: Pair Dove Wing with warm metals, natural stone, or creamy whites to keep it feeling balanced and inviting.

The Takeaway

Neutrals aren’t one-size-fits-all. The right paint color depends on light, surrounding finishes, and how you want a space to feel. Swiss Coffee brings warmth, Chantilly Lace keeps things crisp, Pale Oak offers softness, and Dove Wing adds depth.

If you’re unsure where to start, we’re always happy to help guide your selections. Sometimes the smallest color shift makes the biggest difference.
